Net Zero by 2040: Wales Raises the Ambition – Now Comes the Delivery Challenge

Wales has set out an ambition to accelerate its transition to net zero, with the Welsh Government beginning work on a new Climate and Nature Plan intended to establish a practical pathway towards net zero by 2040.

That is ten years ahead of the UK’s existing 2050 net-zero target and represents a significant statement of intent.

But setting an ambitious target is only the beginning.

The bigger challenge is how we turn that ambition into improvements to real homes, delivered by competent businesses, through processes that are efficient, compliant and capable of operating at scale.

That is where platforms such as Renewably can form part of the delivery infrastructure.

From national ambition to individual properties

Decarbonising the built environment ultimately happens one property at a time.

Every home is different. Its construction, current energy performance, heating system and suitability for renewable and energy-efficiency technologies all influence what improvements may be appropriate.

This means the journey cannot simply begin with a technology.

It needs to begin with the property.

Renewably is being developed around this property-led approach.

By bringing property and energy-performance information into the platform, Renewably can help identify potential improvement opportunities and align them with the capabilities and licensed trades of participating installation companies.

That creates a clearer route between identifying where improvements may be possible and finding the businesses capable of delivering them.

Connecting demand with delivery

A major acceleration in retrofit and renewable installations will require a capable and accessible installer network.

The challenge isn’t simply generating demand. It guarantees that demand can be connected with suitably qualified businesses with the appropriate competencies to undertake the work.

Renewably is designed to help bridge that gap.

Property improvement opportunities can be aligned with relevant installer capabilities, helping create a structured connection between properties requiring improvement and the installation companies capable of delivering those measures.

This can help turn high-level decarbonisation objectives into identifiable opportunities that will ultimately lead to completed installations.

Making installation easier to manage

The installation itself is only one part of the process.

Installation companies increasingly need to navigate multiple systems and requirements covering areas such as:

  • Property and project information
  • Technical and installation documentation
  • Certification and compliance
  • Consumer protection
  • Insurance-backed guarantees
  • Scheme and regulatory requirements
  • Evidence and document management
  • Installation and project records

Individually, these requirements exist for good reason. Collectively, however, managing them across numerous disconnected systems can create a considerable administrative burden.

Renewably is being developed as a single platform through which installation companies can perform and manage the relevant installation, compliance, consumer-protection, lodgement and related processes.

Instead of requiring businesses to move repeatedly between separate services and portals, the objective is to create a more connected installation journey.

At scale, reducing that administrative friction matters.

It can allow installation companies to concentrate more resources on delivering high-quality work while maintaining the standards, evidence and protections required by the market.

Consumer protection must scale with installation.

Increasing installation volumes must not mean reducing consumer protection.

Quite the opposite.

As more households adopt renewable and energy-efficiency technologies, effective protection, traceability and accountability become increasingly important.

Renewably is therefore being developed with an emphasis on consumer protection as part of the installation journey rather than something considered separately at the end.

Through connections with relevant protection and guarantee services, installation records and compliance processes, the platform can help create a clearer digital record of the journey from property opportunity through to completed installation.

The objective is not simply to help more installations happen.

It is to help support well-managed, compliant and appropriately protected installations.

Creating a connected delivery ecosystem

Achieving net zero will require cooperation across an extensive ecosystem.

Government, local authorities, homeowners, landlords, installation companies, certification bodies, consumer-protection organisations, guarantee providers, funders and other industry stakeholders all have a role.

The difficulty is that these participants and processes have traditionally operated through separate systems.

Renewably’s longer-term role is to help provide the digital infrastructure connecting relevant parts of that ecosystem.

At its simplest, that means connecting:

  • Property → Opportunity → Installer → Installation → Compliance → Consumer Protection → Completion

Each stage creates information needed by the next.

By structuring that journey digitally, there is also an opportunity to create better visibility of what improvements are being identified, what work is progressing and, importantly, what has actually been delivered.

Supporting delivery at scale

A target such as net zero by 2040 inevitably raises questions.

How many properties require improvement?

What measures are appropriate?

Where are suitably qualified installers available?

How do those installers manage increased volumes without creating an unsustainable administrative burden?

How do we maintain compliance and consumer protection as the market grows?

And how do stakeholders understand what has actually been delivered?

These are not simply technology questions.

They are delivery-infrastructure questions.

Renewably is being built to help address them.

By combining property intelligence, installer capabilities and the processes surrounding an installation within one platform, Renewably can help provide part of the digital infrastructure required to translate decarbonisation objectives into practical activity.

From targets to delivery

Wales’ proposed pathway towards net zero by 2040 demonstrates the pace of change now being considered.

The technologies required for the transition already exist.

The installation industry already possesses considerable expertise.

The next challenge is connecting the properties, people, technologies, protections, data and processes required to deliver improvements efficiently and at scale.

That is the role Renewably is being developed to play.

Targets provide the destination. Delivery infrastructure helps us get there.

As Wales considers an accelerated pathway towards net zero, Renewably represents an opportunity to help connect national ambition with local delivery — supporting installation companies, protecting consumers and creating a more structured route from identifying an energy improvement opportunity to a successful completion.
